Le Vizir

During a trip to Paris a few years ago, I decided to check out the Musee de L’armee, site of Napoleon’s Tomb.
Aside from the massive tomb, a couple things stick out from that visit:
1) Napoleon’s Stuffed Horse, Vizir- When his horse died, Napoleon had him stuffed and displayed. The horse was actually quite small and a little worse for wear, being nearly 200 years old.
2) There was a fantastic section on WWII, with one area dedicated to propoganda. One of them, a Japanese piece, depicted FDR as a green monster with horns and pointy teeth. I’ve been looking around for it on the internet, but no luck so far. If anyone finds it, send me a link!

The World Will End on Labor Day (Thanks CNN!)
July 3, 2008 · Leave a Comment
On the front page of CNN.com was a link to an article that stated the world could end in August. This wasn’t a breaking news story, but the title of the article alone was concerning enough that I clicked on the link.
According to some critics, the power of this particle accelerator could create tiny black holes, which would settle somewhere in the Earth, expanding until the Earth, and life as we know it, is gobbled up.
Oh man! Sounds scary, right? Well, not quite.
Within the article, I concluded that there was only one stated critic by the name of Walter L. Wagner. All of the other scientists concluded that this was preposterous as the Earth is being bombarded by these same collisions every second of the day.
One scientist actually placed the chances of a cataclysmic event at 1 in 50 million, which is actually less than the chance of a cataclysmic event caused by a rogue asteroid, alien invasion, and Japanese television.
Way to go CNN…

Great White Icon
July 2, 2008 · Leave a Comment
There are very few things in life that I’m passionate about: Football (collective groan from most of my friends), music, great games, horror movies, and sharks-specifically, the great white shark.
I was five years old when I watched the movie Jaws and no movie since has even come close to the impact on me than Stephen Spielberg’s recreation of the Peter Benchley novel.
While there was nothing scarier and more terrible than the great white, I was inspired to learn as much as possible about this apex-predator, which instilled a life-long facination.
I spent some time this week, rekindling my interest in the great white and scouring the internet for any new stories and or information that I may have missed earlier and I’d like to share an interesting, first-hand account of a shark attack on a man in Monterey, California. (No bloody pics included.)
California is one of the three areas of the world in which the great white is “prevalent” due to the water conditions and abundance of their favorite prey-seals and sea lions.
If you have any interest in great whites, there are two books that I highly recommend:The Devil’s Teeth and Close to Shore.
